Suzie’s world is turned around when both her son and husband vanish without trace following an unfathomable plane crash. To deal with the grief, Suzie receives Sunny, an advanced robot, from the electronics firm of her husband’s. At first, Suzie is sceptical about Sunny however, she slowly discovers a surprising friendship with Sunny.
As a ‘consolation’ gift, she is offered Sunny as the latest kind of household robots created by her husband’s electronic company. While Suzie initially doesn’t like Sunny’s attempts at filling the gap that has been left in her world, they slowly become friends. Together they uncover the shocking truth about what happened to Suzie’s family, and are entangled in a realm Suzie did not know existed.
Sunny gracefully moves between genres and forms of fiction, and melds the two genres to create the only thing it is. A sort of existential humor and pop dystopia. Taking place in a highly connected Japan infiltrated by domestic robots The story gradually shifts toward mafia-inspired fiction or yakuza eiga and the paranoid genre.

Rashida Jones is a delight as the lead actress and the robot Sunny is a comical sidekick. The show was created by Katie Robbins, Sunny is inspired by the book Dark Manual by Japanese award-winning Irish writer Colin O’Sullivan. Sunny can be seen on Apple TV+ by A24 and is written and edited by Robbins who also serves as showrunner through the company she runs, Babka Pictures.
