On The Night Caller, Tony is a former teacher who has become a taxi driver, is struggling with the changes in his life, after losing his job and undergoing the pain of a divorce. The only way to get some peace is late-night radio programs especially with Lawrence the charismatic DJ. His admiration of Lawrence quickly develops to become a dangerous addiction which leads him to more erratic behaviour. The film paints a terrifying picture of the decline of Tony and traces the tangled boundary between obsession and admiration.
Tony starts to talk at the DJ. He is attentive and can understand how it feels to be lonely and without an outlet. Lawrence’s views on the world and friendship on air provide Tony confidence but the DJ’s influence leads Tony on a dark, violent direction.
From the first moment of blood-colored water flowing down a bathroom drain the opening scene of The Night Caller set a grim tone. The film was the love child from the Edward Hopper painting (lonely diners dark evenings) along with Martin Parr’s photographic work (unfiltered images from Britain as it was in its unremarkable strangeness) and the depressing reality of Tony’s life and the fun of the streets he traveled was brought to life in each photo. It was occasionally cliched but always an effective.

Glenister’s multi-layered performance, revealing the tiniest of hints of tenderness within Tony’s hurt, hostile armor revealed how important the bond was to Tony. When Rosa’s ex-love interest Stephen (Anthony Brophy) was introduced to the scene The stakes couldn’t have been greater.
