The People about To Die is originally a book written in 1958 written by Daniel P. Mannix. The book tells of gladiators, politicians as well as (slave) traders of the Roman Empire. It was used in 2000 as the basis for the cult production Gladiator from Ridley Scott.
The result is a soaring epic that takes place in Rome in the year 70. Rome was, as it was stated in the opening episode “once the center of civilization and is now a pit of decay and corruption’. As people become more blood-sucking it is necessary for a special stadium to host gladiator battles, the Colosseum. The size of the arena as well as the gladiator and animal fights is massive – as is the gambling industry. In the underground, under the stadium there are thousands of people who are employed and live in the stadium, with thousands of people expected to be killed in gladiator and chariot races.
At the time of 79 Rome is a place of intrigue, corruption and debauchery. In the year 79, Emperor Vespasian (Hopkins) has to decide the son who will succeed him Iron-eater Titus or the sly Domitian. To keep hungry and unhappy people content Emperor Vespasian organizes gladiatorial races and chariot races. People who wish to place bets on the outcome may switch to Tenax (Rheon) as who is a hustler with huge ambitions.
