Manhunt is inspired by the non-fiction book by the author James L. Swanson, that chronicles the aftermath of the assassination of the infamous American president. “After the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, Edwin Stanton, his secretary of war and friend, begins the manhunt for John Wilkes Booth as he is driven mad by the idea that the man is still at large.”
Manhunt is a thriller about conspiracy that tells the story of one of the world’s most well-known, but least understood crimes: the incredible story of the hunt to find John Wilkes Booth in the following of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.
On the 18th of April in 1865, the famous actor John Wilkes Booth shot President Lincoln at the Ford’s Theater in Washington. Secretary of War Edwin Stanton (Tobias Menzies) assumed the role of police chief, bringing Booth before the law. For twelve days Stanton and his men scoured for Booth’s assassin, along with other conspirators, all of whom were sympathizers with the Confederacy.
In the film, you can see exactly where the empathy of the filmmakers lies. Director Beletsky and showrunner Beletsky along with Director Carl Franklin are also African-Americans who highlight the racism that is prevalent among Southerners.

The story could have been an uninteresting, standard thriller however the show’s creator Monica Beletsky (screenwriter of two episodes in Fargo’s third season Fargo ) provides the show with an interesting political strand. Beletsky also discusses the complex circumstances in the post-Lincoln period. Republican Lincoln’s successor vice president Andrew Johnson, a Democrat with a deep sympathy with Southern States. Southern States and a former slave trader.
