The series is based upon Malin Persson Giolito’s novel of the same title. It it is said in the words of Netflix in the description as “a poignant portrait of the power of childhood friendship, and a crushing depiction of what happens when society fails to protect those who need it most.”
The story begins with the murder of a boy who was 14 years old. The fatal shot is fired by the boy’s closest friend. The storyline and the underlying motive of the series are stated as follows according to a press release by Netflix:
