David (Paapa Essiedu) is a Catholic priest. He’s good at his job. Respected in his community in Bristol. Dedicated to his work.
Neither of them expected to fall in love. Probably neither of them wanted to. But it happened anyway.
Season 1 followed them as they wrestled with what that meant. Their vows. Their faith. Their relationships with God. It wasn’t a simple story of “follow your heart.” It was messy. Complicated. Painful at times.

The faith aspect. This is what makes Falling different from other forbidden romance shows. The religious dimension isn’t window dressing. It’s central. Anna and David genuinely believe. Their struggle is real. Season 2 will probably dig even deeper into that tension.
Supporting characters. Season 1 introduced us to other people in their orbits. Father Bennet (Simon Ludders). Adeshola (Chenée Taylor). Dave (Samson Agboola). Mustapha (Cameron E. Douglas). Season 2 might give them more to do, more of their own stories.
Who’s in the Cast?
The core cast is returning:
- Keeley Hawes as Anna. The nun. The heart of the show. Hawes is fantastic in this role.
- Paapa Essiedu as David. The priest. Essiedu brings real depth to what could have been a one-note character.
- Simon Ludders as Father Bennet. Another priest. Probably conflicted about what to do.
- Chenée Taylor as Adeshola.
- Samson Agboola as Dave.
- Cameron E. Douglas as Mustapha.
Also appearing: Susan Brown, Jason Watkins, Niamh Cusack, Adrian Scarborough, and David Dawson. That’s a strong supporting lineup. British television has such a deep bench of character actors.

They choose faith. They stay in their roles. They suppress their feelings. They pray for strength. They live with the longing. Tragic ending. But maybe the right ending for them.
Something in between. Maybe one of them leaves. Maybe they find some compromise. Maybe the church itself evolves in its understanding. Unlikely, but possible.
The show hasn’t tipped its hand yet. That’s a good thing. The uncertainty keeps you watching.
Why Does Falling Still Matter?
Romance dramas are everywhere. But most of them are about obstacles that, in the end, don’t really matter. Wrong timing. Different social classes. Family disapproval. Eventually, love wins.
Falling isn’t like that. The obstacle here is real. It’s not an external force they can overcome together. It’s internal. It’s about who they are at the deepest level.
A nun and a priest in love isn’t a problem to be solved. It’s a contradiction. And the show respects that. It doesn’t offer easy answers.
Keeley Hawes and Paapa Essiedu are both excellent. The writing is careful, thoughtful, never exploitative. And the supporting cast adds texture and weight.
If you like character-driven drama that asks hard questions without pretending to have all the answers, Falling is for you.
