Malory Towers follows 12-year-old Darrell Rivers as played by a promising debutante Ella Bright, as she moves away from home in the very first instance in her life to be a part of an all-girls’ board school. The story is set in the 1940s, on the sand-drenched cliffs that line the Cornish coast, Malory Towers explores this nostalgia-filled world of nightly feasts and pranks, as well as lacrosse and long-lasting friendships.
To a modern audience it is inspirational and aspirational. It tells the story of universal events like shifting cliques and fomo, bullying and crushes or peer pressure, as well as self-doubt. The girls are always watching one another and, as families, are always connected by the shared experiences they share.
Malory Towers set the template for the cult British stories about boarding schools, and it’s no wonder that so many countries have embraced this iconic title.
