The Gallows Pole Storyline & Synopsis
Based on the novel by Benjamin Myers, this three-part series follows the fascinating real-life account of Davids Hartley and the infamous Cragg Vale coiners. The story is set on the hills in York in the early 18th century and follows the mysterious David Hartley. He is the leader of the gang, which includes farmers and weavers who plan to perpetrate the biggest scam ever recorded in British history.
The creator of the series Shane Meadows was keen to discover the background of the story, and the circumstances that led to the all-West Yorkshire community risking their lives to feed their children. Meadows used the multi-award-winning novel written by Benjamin Myers of the same name as a reference. According to Meadows is expected to be an elaboration of Myers’s novel. It should not just allow readers to comprehend the reasons behind why the Cragg Vale Coiners made the choices they did. But perhaps to love the group a little.
